We tested the ULO Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner on thinning hair — Here’s the deal (2025)

Is it time to break up with breakage and sever ties with your struggling split ends?

There’s nothing quite as horrifying as seeing a clump of tangled hair wadded up on a brush or disappear down the shower drain. Unfortunately, hair loss and thinning are a reality for most people. Over 80% of men and nearly 50% of women experience significant hair loss in their lifetime, according to NYU Langone Health.

With so many hair products and supplements on the market — many of which claim to deliver quick and visible results — it can be difficult to know what to look for and where to start. We’ve reviewed a mountain of shampoos and conditioners for every hair concern, but few are capable of transforming a dry, scrappy scalp into a crown of luscious locks.

Ulo’s Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner are naturally formulated to be gentle for regular use, even daily washing. Unlike harsher alternatives, these formulas incorporate ingredients like caffeine and peppermint oil to clean the scalp without overdrying or damaging hair, making them ideal for those looking to maintain a healthy scalp environment.

While these products are not intended for hair regrowth, they can enhance the appearance of your hair for a fuller look and silkier texture. They also pair well with all of Ulo’s other offerings with clinically backed ingredients — including hair growth supplements and a serum that stimulates hair follicles.

To find out whether Ulo’s hair care line can help disguise the battle against baldness, we had the New York Post’s senior director of commerce partnerships, Al Murillo, put the formula through its paces.

Ulo Thickening Shampoo

We tested the ULO Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner on thinning hair — Here’s the deal (1)

Pros:

  • Doesn’t dry out hair like some shampoos
  • High-quality packaging and easy-to-pump-out formula
  • Smells nice, and the scent lasts a fair amount of time before the next wash
  • Helps keep hair looking fuller, per testing
  • Very lightweight formula

Cons:

  • May be pricier than some other shampoos
  • At just under 8 ounces, the supply seems to be on the smaller side

“I’ve used volumizing shampoos in the past, but my hair rarely sees any immediate results from using those products. With the Ulo Thickening Shampoo, it was quite apparent as I was drying it that my hair suddenly had more body and bounce,” shared Murillo.

The Ulo Thickening Shampoo features hydrating ingredients like panthenol and glycerin, which help leave the hair feeling soft. Hydrolyzed keratin and wheat protein work to strengthen the strands for a thicker appearance, and caffeine, saw palmetto, and rosemary oil, help promote hair growth. The essential oils also leave a crisp, subtle, refreshing scent — which Murillo says lasts a fair amount of time.

“As a man with very thin hair, it is always in peril of looking flat or becoming uncomfortably frizzy in certain conditions. In order to achieve volume with strong support, I often have to rely on pomades and hair spray,” Murillo explained.

After using the Ulo Thickening Shampoo, Murillo felt his hair kept a smoother, fuller form. Typically, he styles his hair with a hair dryer to achieve a more shapely blowout. While using his Ulo products, he noticed his hair dried more effectively, and held its shape better.

How to apply: Wet scalp and hair thoroughly. Apply shampoo and generously lather. Leave it in for 1 to 3 minutes, and then rinse it off with water. Formulated for everyday use or intermittent use.

Ulo Thickening Conditioner

Pros:

  • Helps retain volume and sturdiness, per testing
  • High-quality packaging and easy-to-pump-out formula
  • Fresh, yet mild scent (doesn’t smell like chemicals)
  • Lightweight and not sticky
  • Interacts well with dry molding products

Cons:

  • May be pricier than some other conditioners
  • Supply on the smaller side (230 ml)

“I love to use conditioners as part of my hair care routine, but unfortunately, my thin hair prevents me from using them regularly,” Murillo explained. “In my experience, conditioners tend to counteract the benefits of any product intended to provide volume and thickness.”

Ideal for everyday use, the Ulo Thickening Conditioner is stacked with beneficial ingredients like biotin and hydrolyzed collagen, which both support scalp health. Healthy oils like avocado and castor coat each strand of hair for a fuller, more hydrated look.

“After using ULO’s Thickening Conditioner, in conjunction with the brand’s Thickening Shampoo, my hair felt smoother and healthier than it has felt in a long time — not to mention smelling refreshingly of peppermint. But more importantly, it mostly retained some of the volume and sturdiness that the Shampoo provided on its own.”

Murillo also mentioned that the conditioner interacted great with dry molding hair products like pomade.

The Final Verdict

“While Ulo is on the pricier side for the amount you get in a single container, I definitely think it’s worth the investment,” Murillo said.

He’s used a variety of drugstore shampoos and conditioners and even some more expensive brands, but few have seemed to deliver noticeable results. “Paul Mitchell is normally my go-to brand,” said Murillo. “But, it’s thickening formula has never impressed me.”

After a couple of weeks of using Ulo’s Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner, Murillo’s wife asked him if he was wearing any additional product, because his hair looked shinier and a bit fuller.

“I wasn’t (wearing any product) at that moment, so it’s a good testament to Ulo’s effectiveness,” he noted.

Murillo also pointed out that this shampoo and conditioner are free from sulfates and suitable for a variety of different hair types, including color-treated and chemically processed hair. They’re also eco-friendly and cruelty-free.

For someone who has very dry, coarse hair or struggles with hair thinning, Murillo believes that Ulo is an excellent option. The fact that it leaves your hair smelling clean and fresh, without any chemicals, is a bonus.

How We Tested

Murillo has been testing Ulo’s Shampoo and Conditioner for roughly four weeks without any side effects. He uses a single pump of shampoo and conditioner every day. While reviewing the products, he’s taken notes on four main criteria: ease of application, ingredients, results, and overall value.

  • Application: Murillo reviewed the packaging, noted how easy it was to dispense the formula, and evaluated how well it mixes into the hair and washes off.
  • Ingredients: We analyzed the ingredient list to ensure the formula was free of sulfates and noted any natural ingredients that have been shown to promote a healthier scalp and hair.
  • Results: Murillo evaluated whether his hair looked fuller and shinier over time, smelled fresher for longer, and if there was any improvement to thinning areas or overall scalp health.
  • Overall value: Murillo made note of the volume of product in each package, how long it lasted, and whether it was worth the price, considering the results.
